CHAPTER TWELVE

“A bit higher,” I say for the hundredth time, well not hundredth but it feels like I’ve been standing here forever trying to get the ‘Welcome home’ sign hung up inside the bar. The prospects, Kurt and Shane are like the chuckle brothers, useless but funny.

There’s a welcome home party for one of the oldest club members, Jase, he’s being released from jail today. After ten years inside, everyone is excited about his return. Cooper tells me that he was the accountant for the club years back, before Cooper was president. He got himself in to some bother when his pregnant wife was killed. She was run down in the street and it was listed as a hit and run but Jase was convinced it was another club. He went after the president of that club and was caught battering him. His original sentence was only half of what he served but he couldn’t keep his head down inside and ended up on other charges.

“The bar looks great Mila,” smiles Harper. She isn’t on shift today, but she’s come to give me a hand. I’m hoping she will stick around for the party. As my best friend, the guys are getting used to seeing her hanging around the club.

“I feel like this is my first important duty as the Old Lady to the President,” I grin. She laughs because she knows I hate the title, I think the whole thing is ridiculous and a bit old fashioned. I mean, who in this day and age can lay claim to someone. Brook tells me they take this shit seriously and sometimes when an old lady tries to leave their man, they get forced back. I was tempted to try it just for fun, to see if it was true but somehow, I don’t think Cooper is the chasing type of guy.

“There’s a lot of charters coming from all over today, stick around. You may find the biker of your dreams,” I say.

Harper shrugs her shoulder. I know she’s still pining after Kain, even though he is back with his ex. Ginger seems nice enough, although she keeps herself to herself. I still catch Kain watching Harper, Brook thinks he secretly wants Harper but is too proud to admit it.

“The girls reckon that Jase was a bit of alright back in the day. I bet he needs a night of fun after being away for ten years,” I wink.

“You still looking for love Harper?” It’s Kain. His voice rumbles across the bar and Harper jumps and spins around to face him.

“Actually I’m seeing someone, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to look.”

“Yeah, And who are you seeing?” he smirks.

“Marshall,” she says proudly. Kain almost chokes on his drink and I drop the pins I’m using to put the decorations up.

“What?” I screech. She never told me.

“Marshall?” repeats Kain, looking furious.

“Sorry I didn’t say Mils, It’s just a casual thing. Neither of us are looking for anything but fun,” she explains looking sheepish.
